As we start to get an idea of what companies are doing for their 2023 benefits, it's easy to get distracted by some new and creative benefits, but don't lose sight of what really matters - the core benefits!
When clients start to mention to me that they want to look at a certain company because the really like a specific benefit, like dental, I always listen, but keep things in perspective. One of the questions that I often mention to my clients and prospects is the following: "If you get sick, and I mean really sick, which company do you want to stand behind you on your road to recovery?" If it so turns out that the company with solid "core" benefits also has an extra benefit that can help you, like an OTC (over-the counter) card, or vision allowance, that's perfect. However, don't make the decision based on the "extras" and neglect the value or quality of the core benefits.
A second factor that has to be considered closely is the quality of the customer service. Nothing more frustrating than being on the phone for 20 minutes to request a simple change of address or a replacement ID card. We all know that certain companies struggle with basic service, while other excel at it.
We will see some new things thrown at us this fall. Some of these benefits have already been revealed and are quite creative. Of course we're not allowed to talk about them with clients until after October 1st. Remember that insurance companies do marketing studies and try to figure out how to get the attention of the Medicare recipients, and that some of these new and creative benefits sound real attractive, but in essence aren't as useful as they may seem. Be sure to study the details before you present them, and also be sure to keep your clients focused on what matters if they happen to get sick - the core benefits!
